Int'l Cricket Council Tightens Champions Trophy Security Following London Attack

The "Australian side is expected to stay in England and the Champions Trophy is likely to continue despite the second terror attack to strike" the U.K. in "less than a fortnight," according to Peter Lalor of THE AUSTRALIAN. Security was "tightened" after the May 22 attack in Manchester and the Int'l Cricket Council said Saturday night that they were "waiting on advice from local authorities." The Australian and South African sides were staying in Paddington, 8km from the site of Saturday's attack in London. Cricket Australia Security Manager Frank Dimasi, a former Melbourne homicide detective, "swung into action minutes after news of the attack came through." Dimasi sent messages to all of the players and staff and "soon established that they had all returned from dinner and were safely in the hotel." Staff members had been in the area of the attack earlier in the day. Things were "more immediate" for the Sri Lankan and Bangladesh sides that were staying at the Grange Tower Bridge Hotel, which was "placed in lockdown" on Saturday night. The hotel was "in the heart of the chaos as the terror unfolded." Australia captain Steve Smith said at training that the side was "getting on with the tournament but had been advised to stay alert." Smith added, "Everyone on the Australian cricket team is accounted for, and, yeah, everyone is shocked and saddened by what happened last night." Some of the players have their wives and children with them but "gave no indication they would change plans." Australia vice-captain David Warner's wife, Candice Warner, who is in London with their two children, said that "they planned to stay at this stage" (THE AUSTRALIAN, 6/5). In Sydney, Cherny & Collins reported a CA spokesperson said that the governing body would work with the ICC and tournament organizing committee to "ensure the Australians' safety." The spokesperson added, "As with the rest of the world, the Australian team is shocked and saddened at the events that have occurred in London overnight and our thoughts are with those directly involved and their loved ones. The team, support staff and traveling contingent have been accounted for. Our security team is working closely with the ICC and LOC (local organizing committee) to ensure the safety and security of our players and support staff is paramount" (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 6/4).

ENHANCED SECURITY: The PA reported seven people were killed and "dozens more injured" by three terrorists "just over two miles from The Oval," one of the three venues hosting the ICC Champions Trophy. Sunday's match between India and Pakistan at Edgbaston "went ahead amid increased security and was preceded by a minute's silence." The ICC said, "The enhanced security around venues implemented following the Manchester attack remains in place, and this includes significantly enhanced police and security presence for today's match." The England & Wales Cricket Board tweeted, "Our thoughts go to all of those affected by last night's shocking events in London along with our admiration for those supporting them." South Wales Police said that Sunday's events in Cardiff Bay following Saturday's Champions League final would "go ahead as planned." British & Irish Lions captain Sam Warburton, who played the first match of the club's New Zealand tour on Saturday, said that "the squad's thoughts are with those affected." Warburton: "The guys have woken up to some news of some unfortunate events that happened in London. I just wanted to wish those involved all the best wishes from the Lions players and management." England's football team, which is preparing for games in Scotland and France, expressed its condolences on social media. England tweeted, "Our thoughts and sympathies are with the victims and their families and friends following the attacks in London on Saturday evening." In Saint-Étienne, France, Team Sky "lined up at the front of the peloton for a minute's silence on the start line" of the Critérium du Dauphiné (PA, 6/4).

'COMFORTABLE': REUTERS' Amlan Chakraborty reported the Australian cricket board said that it was "comfortable with the level of security provided" to its Champions Trophy team. A CA spokesperson said, "At this stage we are comfortable with the level of security being provided to us and will continue to monitor the situation." Sri Lanka Cricket "took to Twitter" to assure fans that their team, which lost to South Africa at The Oval on Saturday night, was safe. South Africa, which arrived last month for a three-month tour of England, said that its players were "uneasy" following the May 22 attack in Manchester (REUTERS, 6/4).
