Media Notes: Russian Confed Cup, World Cup Broadcast Issues To Be 'Settled' Soon

Russian Deputy PM Vitaly Mutko said that an issue regarding the rights of Russian TV to broadcast matches of the 2017 Confederations Cup and, perhaps the 2018 World Cup, "will be soon settled." A conglomerate of state-owned Channel One Russia and VGTRK and Match TV, owned by Gazprom-Media, "refused to buy the broadcasting rights" for the 2018 World Cup and the 2017 Confederations Cup at $120M. The price is "nearly four times higher" than the $32M that the Russian channels paid for the broadcasting rights of the 2014 World Cup (TASS, 5/24).

Hong Kong fans of Chelsea and Arsenal will not be able to legally watch their teams play in the FA Cup final this weekend after a "surprise announcement from broadcaster LeSports HK." The channel said that "due to adjustments to programmes" it would no longer be "showing the showpiece of the English football season," without providing an explanation (SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST, 5/25).

Social media trolls "hijacked a Champions League promotional campaign by Walkers Crisps with sick images of serial killers." Fans were invited to send in their selfies on social media, "which were then super-imposed onto an automatic video response from Gary Lineker." But a number of people "submitted pictures of serial killers and other criminals" (WALES ONLINE, 5/25).

Lagardère Sports and the Int'l Weightlifting Federation reached a new media relationship that will run through '20. As the strategic media partner for the IWF, Lagardère Sports will be the host broadcaster for the next three IWF World Championships. It will also market the TV rights for each event around the world. In addition, Lagardère will serve as a consultant to the IWF to reimagine the IWF Grand Prix (Lagardère Sports).

The All India Football Federation and marketing partner Football Sports Development Ltd. have shared the national team's yearly fixtures since March. All the int'l fixtures will be broadcast live on Star Sports and its digital platform, Hotstar (PTI, 5/23).

Modern Times Group "secured the exclusive Finnish rights" to the UEFA European Qualifiers in '20 and the qualifying tournament for the World Cup in '22, along with the rights to UEFA’s new European competition, the UEFA Nations League. The deal means that every season, a total of 250 national team games "will be shown on MTG’s Viasat pay-TV channels and Viaplay streaming service." A large number of selected high-profile games "will also be available on Viafree," the free streaming service launched in Finland in April '17 (DIGITAL TV EUROPE, 5/24).

The Europa League Final between ManU and Ajax, broadcast on W9 in France, drew an average audience of 1.5 million viewers. The number translated to a 7% market share. The Europa League semifinal between Olympique Lyonnais and Ajax earlier this month was watched by 2.3 million viewers on M6 in France (L’ÉQUIPE, 5/25).
