Football Notes: ICSS Criticizes FA Of Ireland For Handling Of Athlone Town Scandal

A senior official at the Int'l Centre for Sport Security criticized the FA of Ireland over the League of Ireland First Division side Athlone Town betting scandal. The center has been tracking the movements of Chinese agent Eric Mao, who has been involved with "a number of clubs where match-fixing allegations have been made" and is linked to the int'l investment in Athlone in February. The FAI has declined to reveal the identity of the investors. ICSS Senior Manager of Sports Intelligence Javier Mena said, "That is totally unacceptable" (LONDON TIMES, 5/25).

The FA is treating women's football as an "afterthought" by "failing to properly prepare or reward match officials," according to Women's Super League 1 side Chelsea Ladies Manager Emma Hayes. Hayes said that the "pool of referees is too big, while match fees are around half of those paid out in the men's National League." The FA said that it is investing "record amounts" in the women's game. Hayes: "We have referees that are coming into the women's game with zero training and development" (BBC, 5/25).

A former general secretary of the Cayman Islands FA has "pleaded guilty to money laundering conspiracy in connection with the U.S. probe into bribery" involving FIFA. Costas Takkas, a 60-year-old British citizen, entered his plea on Wednesday at a hearing before U.S. District Judge Pamela Chen in N.Y. He faces a maximum 20-year prison term when he is sentenced on Sept. 19, according to court records (REUTERS, 5/24).

The German FA (DFB) reacted to Dortmund's warning that the city could withdraw its bid to become a host at Euro 2024 by "inviting city representatives to hold talks." It also moved the deadline for cities to make their host applications formal "back by a month" from the original date of June 12. On Wednesday, Dortmund Mayor Ullrich Sierau warned that the city could withdraw its bid to become a host because of an "unclear financial situation" (ESPN.com, 5/25).
