Manchester Clubs Join Together To Donate £1M To Victims Of Terror Attack

ManU and Man City "put their football rivalry aside" to donate £1M ($1.3M) to victims of the suicide bomb attack, according to Mark Molloy of the London TELEGRAPH. The clubs have "come together to support the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund." ManU Exec Vice-Chair Ed Woodward said, "The barbarism of Monday evening’s attack has shocked everyone. Our clubs are right at the heart of our local communities in Manchester and it is right that we present a unified response to this tragedy." Man City Chair Khaldoon Al Mubarak said, "The hope of both our clubs is that our donation will go some small way to alleviate the daunting challenges faced by those directly affected and that our acting together will serve as a symbol to the world of the unbreakable strength of the spirit of Manchester." Arsenal also pledged to donate £50,000 ($64,685) to the British Red Cross (TELEGRAPH, 5/25).

PRINCE WILLIAM: In London, Martyn Ziegler reported Prince William will "lay a wreath before the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium in a tribute to those who lost their lives in the Manchester terror attack." The Duke of Cambridge, who is the president of the FA, will be joined by FA Chair Greg Clarke in laying commemorative wreaths. There will "also be a period of silence before kick-off, while the Arsenal and Chelsea players and the match officials will wear black armbands as a mark of respect." The FA called for fans to arrive as early as possible, and no later than an hour before the 5:30pm kickoff, to allow time for “thorough searches” at the entrances (LONDON TIMES, 5/25).

NO TROPHY EVENTS: The BBC reported neither Aberdeen nor Celtic "will hold Scottish Cup Final trophy events, whoever wins at Hampden Park, in the wake of the Manchester bombing." Aberdeen confirmed there "would be no victory parade on Sunday" should the club lift the Cup on Saturday. Celtic also said that, in the event of winning, the team "would not be able to parade the trophy back at Celtic Park." The planned Heroes and Legends bus parade at Celtic Park on Sunday was also canceled (BBC, 5/25).
