French Open Security Measures Unchanged From '16 Despite Manchester Attack

The French Open "has not changed its security measures following the recent attack in Manchester, England, but will keep the heightened level of security already in place," according to Kamakshi Tandon of TENNIS.com. French Tennis Federation (FFT) spokesperson Stephan Post said, "We are still in a phase of level-two enhanced security. We are at the same level. There were no special instructions from our security partner, the police department [of Paris]." There will be a "slight increase" in the amount of security officers, with 1,200 members positioned to be deployed during the tournament. The French Open increased security "significantly" in '16 "following attacks in Paris." Post added, "We really do prioritize security in our actions. We are trained, we have done simulations and rehearsals (TENNIS.com, 5/24).

LIONS TOUR: In Cardiff, Ian Mitchelmore reported New Zealand PM Bill English will "discuss the possibility of increasing stadium security" during the British & Irish Lions tour following the terrorist attack. Lions fans are "expected to make the trip to the southern hemisphere in their thousands for the tour," which starts on June 3 against the NZ Provincial Barbarians side and ends with the third Test against the All Blacks at Eden Park on July 8. When asked if security at stadiums could be increased for the tour, English said, "We have a team of people who are pretty experienced at it and I'm absolutely sure they will be taking into account these events, if only because so many of the fans coming here are coming from the U.K. (WALES ONLINE, 5/25).

SALFORD RED DEVILS: The BBC reported Super League side Salford Red Devils Owner Marwan Koukash said that playing Friday's game against Catalans "shows solidarity and support" to victims of the Manchester attack. Fans have been offered free entry to the game at AJ Bell Stadium but "will be asked to make a donation to help those affected." It will be the first major sporting event in Greater Manchester since the bomb incident at Manchester Arena. Koukash said, "No, we did not consider postponing. ... It is an opportunity, instead of postponing it, to show solidarity and support to those affected" (BBC, 5/25).

SAFETY APP: The BBC also reported a smartphone app to keep people in Cardiff safe in the event of a "major incident" has been launched ahead of the Champions League final. The Evac app will "provide visitors and residents with information in the event of a fire, flood or terrorist attack." Cardiff Council said that the app was potentially a "life-saver." The app provides push notifications to inform people of major incidents in the city, and "if necessary, directs them to the nearest evacuation point" (BBC, 5/25).
