Dortmund Could Scrap Bid To Host Euro 2024 Amid Financial Concerns, Mayor Says

Dortmund "could withdraw its bid to become a host city" at Euro 2024 because of an "unclear financial situation," Mayor Ullrich Sierau warned, according to Stephan Uersfeld of ESPN.com. Sierau said, "If the business model of the German FA (DFB) and UEFA is to let us pay and them cash in, then it's a bit lopsided." Sierau said that the DFB demands that candidate cities "support them in the best way at their own expense." The bill facing the city could reportedly hit €30M ($33.6M). Sierau said that a decision on whether to withdraw the bid would be made at a council session on June 1. Dortmund's Westfalenstadion is reported to be part of the bid (ESPN.com, 5/24).
