Olympic Notes: Tokyo, PyeongChang, Beijing Considering Torch Relay Exchange

The organizing committees of the next three Olympic Games -- PyeongChang, Tokyo and Beijing -- have "been in talks about exchanging runners for their torch relays as a symbolic gesture of peace." Tokyo COO Yukihiko Nunomura said that the IOC "initially suggested sharing overlay or temporary facilities, but with that proposal posing too big of a physical challenge, the East Asian neighbors hatched the more practical idea of swapping torch relay runners" (KYODO, 5/23).

The IOC exec board will meet at the Lausanne Palace Hotel on July 9 and 10. The briefing will give 2024 candidate cities L.A. and Paris the opportunity to present their proposals directly to IOC members and int'l federations, and offer any response to the Evaluation Commission report, prior to the '24 host city election that will take place on Sept. 13 during the 130th session in Lima, Peru. The briefings will be closed to the media (IOC).
