Former MotoGP world champion NICKY HAYDEN died from head injuries sustained "after a fatal cycling crash in Italy last week." The American suffered “serious cerebral damage” and was in an induced coma before losing his battle on Monday. Hayden, 36, who won the MotoGP title in '06, was in "critical condition after the collision last Wednesday" (THE SUN, 5/22). ... Former world No. 1 VICTORIA AZARENKA is "planning to play at Wimbledon as she returns to tennis following the birth of her son." The Belarusian, 27, has not played since last year's French Open in May, and "gave birth to son LEO in December." She said, "Leo kinda said he wants to see London and Wimbledon" (BBC, 5/22). ... A-League side Sydney FC parted ways with FILIP HOLOSKO after its "marquee player for the past two seasons returned to Europe on Sunday ahead of the expiration of his contract next week." The 33-year-old Slovakian international's A$1.15M ($860,000) deal was not renewed after the Sky Blues signed BOBO and MILOS NINKOVIC as the club's "marquee players" for the '17-18 season (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 5/22). ... Women's golfer JANG HA-NA is "rescinding her membership of the U.S. LPGA Tour and will return to South Korea to compete on the domestic women's golf circuit from next month," her agency Sportizen said. The 25-year-old, who had four wins on the U.S. tour since her '15 rookie season and earned more than $2.6M in prize money, has "endured a trying year because of issues away from the course" (REUTERS, 5/21).

HORSE RACING: Godolphin will confirm JAMES CUMMINGS as its head Australian trainer to replace JOHN O'SHEA as early as Tuesday. It is a "coming together of one of the most famous families in Australian racing with a global powerhouse headed by SHEIKH MOHAMMED BIN RASHID AL MAKTOUM." Cummings signed a seven-figure contract to "take over the massive racing operation," which has stables at Agnes Banks, Warwick Farm and Flemington (THE AGE, 5/22).
