'Struggling Firm' Supported Craig Whyte's £10M Rangers Bid, Court Hears

A London financier, whose firm was "struggling to pay its rent," gave assurances that Craig Whyte had £10M to invest in Scottish football side Rangers, a court heard, according to the BBC. Witness John Newlands said that in the year before Whyte bought Rangers, he asked Whyte "for a loan to pay his company's rent." Whyte, 46, is "on trial at the High Court in Glasgow for acquiring Rangers by fraud," which he denied. Newlands told a jury that he had "given his backing" to Whyte "in good faith." He said that he had "been shown documents" indicating Whyte's company had funds available to invest in Rangers (BBC, 5/22).
