Premier League Sees Up To 14-Fold Increase In Value Of Broadcast Deals

The Premier League will earn £3.2B ($4.2B) from foreign broadcasters from '16-19 but has "already wrapped up some lucrative deals" for '19-22 "worth between twice and 14 times as much as now," according to Nick Harris of the London DAILY MAIL. The main sports broadcaster in Sub-Saharan Africa, SuperSport, reportedly "agreed to double" the £84M ($109.5M) a year it pays from '16-19 to guarantee a £168M ($219M)-a-year deal in its region for '19-22. Growth has also been seen in China, where digital firm PPTV will pay £180M ($234.7M) per year for '19-22, up from £13M ($17M) a year now paid by SSMG -- "almost 14 times as much." In the U.S., NBC is paying £128M ($166.9M) per season through '22 in a six-year, $1B deal worth twice as much as its last one. The Premier League currently makes £1.07B ($1.39B) per year "from all overseas deals combined" (DAILY MAIL, 5/20).

INTERVIEW LEVY: In London, Tom Hopkinson reported at least one Premier League club is "hatching a plan to charge stakeholders such as Sky Sports and BT Sport for manager and player interviews." Commercial execs "at a top-six side want to deny broadcasters the free access they currently get" to players "unless they are willing to pay for the privilege." The club wants to introduce the "interview levy" ahead of the '19-20 season when the next TV rights deal begins (DAILY MIRROR, 5/20).
