Event Notes: Birmingham, Liverpool Are U.K.'s Only Remaining 2022 CWG Bidders

Birmingham and Liverpool "are the two remaining English cities" bidding to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games after "rivals dropped out." London and Manchester "will not move forward in the race to host the event," which became available in March when Durban, South Africa, was "stripped of the right to host the event." Australia, Canada and Malaysia "have also had cities express interest in taking over as hosts." The decision on which city will become the U.K. Government's official bid, "with public funding," will be made this summer (SKY SPORTS, 5/17).

The race to become the host nation for the 2023 Rugby World Cup is "really heating up." Last week, South Africa "lifted a ban" on the country's rugby union hosting int'l events. This week, a report from Deloitte said that the tournament would be worth €2.4B ($2.7B) to the French economy. The biggest source of money would come from tourism, with "450,000 foreign visitors predicted to attend." Ireland is the favorite to host the event (IRISH INDEPENDENT, 5/17).

UFC
announced its return to Saitama Super Arena on Sept. 23. It will be UFC's fifth live event in Japan and the promotion's third event held in the Asia-Pacific region this year (UFC).

The UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation announced the return of the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Jiu-Jitsu World Tour Season 3, which will take place in '17-18 in Tokyo, L.A., Rio de Janeiro, Abu Dhabi and London (UAEJJF).

Malaysia's Asian Cup qualifier in North Korea was postponed a second time due to "geo-political tension" and "safety and security" concerns. The match was first postponed following the murder of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un's half-brother in Malaysia, and is now scheduled for Oct. 5 (BBC, 5/17).

The Indian cricket team "will embark on a limited-overs tour of West Indies next month," soon after the Int'l Cricket Council Champions Trophy. Beginning on June 23 at the Queen's Park Oval in Port of Spain, India will play five ODIs which will be followed by a Twenty20 int'l at Jamaica's Sabina Park on July 9 (REUTERS, 5/17).
