Former EPL side Burnley forward and captain PETER NOBLE died, aged 72. Noble made 299 appearances for the club between '73 and '79, scoring 80 goals and "boasting a 100% penalty record" (BBC, 5/6). ... Haas Formula 1 re-upped with development racer SANTINO FERRUCCI for another season. The American will "also continue full time in the GP3 Series for DAMS." The 18-year-old will "remain embedded with Haas F1" whenever he is not obligated to DAMS (AUTOWEEK, 5/8). ... Three-time Tour de France winner CHRIS FROOME said that he was unhurt after claiming to be "rammed" by a car driver while training in southern France. The Briton, who rides for Team Sky, posted a picture on Twitter of his damaged bike and will report the incident to local police (BBC, 5/9).

The Pakistan Cricket Board summoned all-rounder MOHAMMAD NAWAZ to "appear before its security and vigilance department as part of its ongoing probe into corruption in the game." The PCB is "probing allegations of corruptions in the second season of the Pakistan Super League" (REUTERS, 5/9).

BACK IN THE GAME
: League One side Chesterfield striker CHED EVANS "completed his return to Sheffield United, signing a three-year contract." Evans, 28, last played for Sheffield in '12, before he was "found guilty of raping a 19-year-old woman" in '11 and sentenced to five years in prison. That conviction was "quashed" and, following a retrial in Oct. '16, Evans was found not guilty (BBC, 5/8).

'INSPIRED': EUGENIE BOUCHARD used her game to "send a message" to MARIA SHARAPOVA by defeating the Russian 7-5 2-6 6-4 in a second round match at the Madrid Open. Bouchard, "one of the most outspoken players against Sharapova's return to tennis following a doping ban," jumped up and down after converting her second match point in just under three hours (THE AGE, 5/9).
