Finance Notes: William Hill Suffers Slowing Growth At U.K. Betting Shops

William Hill has "suffered slowing growth" at its U.K. betting shops, as punters "increasingly choose to place their wagers online" and as other companies complain of "falling consumer confidence on the high street." In a trading update for the 17 weeks to April 25, the bookmaker said on Tuesday that total net revenues at its retail arm, which account for the "majority of its revenues," had increased 1%, down from 2% over the same period a year earlier. But the company said that it had enjoyed a "positive start to 2017," with 16% revenue growth at its online division, which accounts for "about a third of its business," and "even stronger growth" at its U.S. and Australian divisions (FINANCIAL TIMES, 5/9).

Paul Pogba's agent will earn £41M ($53M) from the player's move to ManU, according to a book published in Germany this week. The book, "Football Leaks: The Dirty Business of Football," claimed that Mino Raiola was entitled to £22.8M of the £89M fee paid by ManU to Juventus to sign Pogba last summer. It alleged that the agent is also due more than £16M ($20.7M) in "further payments" and an additional £2.2M ($2.8M) from the player, taking his total earnings from the deal to £41M (LONDON TIMES, 5/9).

England will "share a record prize pot" approaching £2M ($2.59M) if it wins the Int'l Cricket Council Champions Trophy next month. Eoin Morgan's team is the favorite for the tournament, which would be its "first major 50-over global title," and the 15 players will pocket close to £130,000 ($168,000) each "if the winnings are divided equally among the squad." India collected $2M when it won the trophy four years ago and it is understood the ICC will "allocate more than that to the winning side this time around," with the prize money moving toward the $2.5M mark (London EVENING STANDARD, 5/9).
