Event Notes: Future Of Wellington Sevens To Be Decided In Two Weeks

A decision on whether Wellington "will continue to host the sevens could be known in two weeks' time." The "powerhouses" of world rugby are heading to Tokyo for the Rugby World Cup 2019 pool draw on May 10, and New Zealand Rugby CEO Steve Tew said that the Wellington leg of the sevens series "was due to be discussed then." Tew on Thursday declared NZR's finances to be in "solid financial health." Tew said that NZR "conducted a very thorough review" of this year's tournament. He said, "We've got some ideas about the future of sevens, we're consulting the people we need to consult with, and as soon as we've finished that process, we'll let you know" (STUFF, 4/27).

Celta Vigo said that ManU has not made all of its allocated tickets for the Europa League semifinal return leg at Old Trafford available and "will ask UEFA to take action." Article 36 of UEFA's competition regulations state that home clubs must make at least 5% of the total approved UEFA capacity of their stadium "available exclusively to visiting supporters." Old Trafford is the biggest ground in the Premier League with a current capacity of more than 75,000. Celta Vigo confirmed it has "only received 1,900 of 3,780 tickets" it is entitled to for the encounter (ESPN.com, 4/27).

The Pakistan Cricket Board called off its scheduled cricket tour of Bangladesh this year, PCB Chair Shaharyar Khan said. Bangladesh last toured Pakistan in '07-08. Pakistan has since traveled to Bangladesh in '11 and '15 and was scheduled to play two tests, three ODIs and a Twenty20 int'l in July and August. Khan said that Bangladesh "had failed to reciprocate Pakistan's visits" (REUTERS, 4/27).

Shanghai Shenhua's Chinese Super League clash with Shandong Luneng, which was scheduled to be played this weekend, was postponed due to "ongoing repair work" at Hongkou Stadium. The venue was damaged in a fire in late March and the CSL "delayed the meeting between the two teams until Sept. 19 to allow repairs to be carried out on the stadium's electrical circuits" (ESPN.com, 4/26).
