League Notes: Sharapova To Learn If She Gets French Open Wildcard on May 16

Maria Sharapova will find out on May 16 if she has "been given a wildcard for the French Open." The 30-year-old Russian's 15-month ban for using meldonium ended on Wednesday when she played in the first round of the Stuttgart Open as a "wildcard entry." French Tennis Federation President Bernard Giudicelli said that he would call Sharapova before the decision is made public on Facebook. Giudicelli, who said that he will discuss Sharapova's wildcard with French Open Dir Guy Forget on May 15, added, "The tournament is bigger than the players" (BBC, 4/26).

Australia's football execs are to "close the country's Centre of Excellence, in the hope that A-League clubs will fill the void in developing young players." The Canberra center, linked to the Australian Institute for Sport, "will close later this year," with Football Federation Association CEO David Gallop saying "the time had come for change" (REUTERS, 4/26).

In a "massive blow to its influence" in the Int'l Cricket Council, the Board of Control for Cricket in India was on Wednesday "decimated at the global body’s board meeting where the majority voted for a change in governance and revenue structures." On the first day of the ICC Board Meeting in Dubai, "both the change in governance structure as well as the revamped revenue model were put to a floor test." The BCCI lost the vote on "governance and constitutional changes" by a 1-9 margin, while the revenue model, which was the "bigger bone of contention," saw India "walloped" by a 2-8 margin. The only country that voted alongside the BCCI was Sri Lanka (PTI, 4/26).

Advocating a zero-tolerance policy toward doping, Indian Sports Minister Vijay Goel asked the National Anti-Doping Agency to "consider the possibility of making it a criminal offence." Goel's initiative "came in the wake of the dope scandal that has rocked Indian football after goalkeeper Subrata Paul tested positive for a banned substance" (PTI, 4/26).
