Football Notes: Infantino Suggests VAR Will Be Used At 2018 World Cup

FIFA President Gianni Infantino suggested that video referees will be used at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Video assistant referee technology "can only review incidents relating to goals, red cards, mistaken identities and penalties." Infantino: "We will use video refereeing because we've had nothing but positive feedback so far" (BBC, 4/26).

Russian Deputy PM Vitaly Mutko rejected claims that journalists covering the 2017 Confederations Cup "will be restricted in what they can report." Earlier this week, German FA (DFB) President Reinhard Grindel backed German newspaper Bild "over claims of censorship ahead of the tournament." In a statement issued jointly with FIFA and published by Bild, Mutko said, "There will be no restrictions for journalists at the Confederations Cup. They can write about whatever they want" (ESPN.com, 4/26).

Five days after CONCACAF filed a lawsuit in federal court in Brooklyn, N.Y., claiming $20M in damages against former execs Jack Warner and Chuck Blazer, Warner responded by saying that he will file a $40M suit against CONCACAF claiming "persistent defamation" of character. He also said that he is suing U.S. Soccer Federation President and FIFA Council member Sunil Gulati (INSIDE WORLD FOOTBALL, 4/26).

Liga MX side Monarcas Morelia President Álvaro Dávila announced that fans will not be charged for tickets to Saturday's game against Pumas. Dávila said that the goal "is to fill the stadium and support the team in its fight to avoid relegation" (LA AFICIÓN, 4/25).
