Amsterdam Arena To Be Renamed To Honor Johan Cruyff

Amsterdam Arena is to be renamed the Johan Cruyff Arena "after the city’s most famous footballer," who died of cancer a year ago, according to DUTCH NEWS. The plan, "first mooted" shortly after his death, "has now been agreed by all parties concerned" and will be put to the city council, the stadium board and the Ajax board within six months, broadcaster NOS said on Wednesday. The three parties said in a joint statement, "By changing the name, we want to honour the best footballer Amsterdam and the Netherlands ever had." In addition, "a square, street or bridge in Amsterdam" will also be named after Cruyff (DUTCH NEWS, 4/26). REUTERS' Mark Gleeson reported as a player with Ajax, Cruyff was the "dazzling poster boy" for the philosophy of "total football," embodied in Manager Rinus Michels' "magnificent Dutch team that he captained in his pomp to the 1974 World Cup final." His son Jordi said that the family was "thrilled by the recognition" (REUTERS, 4/26).
