French LFP Announces Strategic Plan To Catch Up To European Rivals

The French Professional Football League (LFP) announced a strategic plan for ’17-22, which “proposes a series of measures to reform the French game,” according to Hermant & Moatti of L’ÉQUIPE. The 33-page document detailed “professional football’s roadmap” to be competitive with France’s European peers by ’22. The objective assigned to clubs is to “raise net annual revenues, excluding TV and transfer rights,” by €350M ($383M) by ’21-22. The sporting plan includes “entering the Big 4 in UEFA rankings, to be ranked third in terms of ‘spectacle’ (stars, goals, suspense, influence) and to attain a 50% public approval rating (currently 33%).” To achieve this, the LFP detailed “five priorities.” First, to “promote French professional football internationally.” This could happen by “moving match times to the afternoon” to accommodate emerging markets. The league also wants to “protect and promote French training to optimize transfer revenues.” The LFP wants to “better know and serve its supporters to raise matchday revenue and merchandising,” as well as “develop relations with sponsors, investors (domestic and foreign) and UEFA” (L’ÉQUIPE, 4/25).
