Franchise Notes: Former Rangers Finance Dir Says Whyte's Takeover Offer Seemed 'Viable'

Craig Whyte's offer to take over Scottish side Rangers in '11 "seemed a viable proposition," according to former club Finance Dir Donald McIntyre. McIntyre told the High Court in Glasgow that Whyte had said that "he would use his own money to fund the purchase." Whyte acquired a majority shareholding for £1, but the buyer was also required to pay £18M to Lloyds Bank -- a Rangers creditor. Whyte is accused of a "fraudulent acquisition of Rangers." The 46-year-old faces two charges relating to the purchase -- "one of fraud and another under the Companies Act." He "pleaded not guilty to both allegations" (BBC, 4/24).

National Rugby League side Bulldogs told the NRL and NSW Rugby League that its players "will be unavailable for selection" for next weekend's final installment of the City-Country representative match. Bulldogs coach Des Hasler does not want to "risk losing players to injury in a match many clubs deem as irrelevant." The club is "concerned about the welfare of its players, who will have to back up four days after the Sunday match in Mudgee for the Bulldogs' round 10 clash against the Cowboys on Thursday night" (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 4/24).
