Event Notes: Spanish Federation Postpones Race Following Child's Death

The Spanish Motorsports Federation (RFEDA) announced in a statement that the second event on the Championship of Spain calendar, which was scheduled to take place from May 5-7 at Fernando Alonso's karting circuit, will be postponed "due to the death of Gonzalo Basurto and the ongoing investigation." A new date will be announced this week. Basurto, 11, was killed in a karting crash during a practice at the track on Saturday. Alonso tweeted on Sunday, "I wake up this morning on one of the saddest days. Destroyed. From here, an enormous hug to Gonzalo's family and all of Karting" (AS, 4/24).

The MLB has "proposed sending its All-Star team to South Korea for an offseason exhibition game." An official with the Korea Baseball Organization said that MLB made the suggestion during a visit to Seoul last fall, "but nothing has been decided on that front." The official said, "We haven't had any concrete discussion since then. It's something we're still reviewing" (YONHAP, 4/24).

Caribbean Premier League organizers confirmed that the fifth installment will start on Aug. 4. The 34-game competition, which will be staged in seven countries over a six-week period, will conclude with the final on Sept. 9, with the host country to be announced in due course (CPL).

A "huge smoke bomb" set off among the audience of the PSV vs. Ajax eredivisie match at Philips Stadium in Eindhoven on Sunday "left 15 people injured." The first aid team had to treat 10 supporters, four security guards and a steward "for respiratory problems and burning eyes." A banner displayed with the smoke bomb "showed that a small group of supporters were protesting against stadium bans." One person was arrested (NETHERLANDS TIMES, 4/24).

Turkish side Istanbul Başakşehir President Goksel Gumusdag apologized after an altercation between some of the club's players and a reporter "ended up in a brawl." Several Başakşehir players were "caught on camera fighting with A Spor journalist Selman Kutlu and cameraman Ahmet Caglar Yildirim on Saturday following Basaksehir's 3-3 draw with Rizespor in the Turkish Super League." The incident was "seemingly sparked" by a Rizespor fan who insulted former Newcastle midfielder Emre Belozoglu near the team bus after the game and "when the journalists tried to film the incident they were confronted by several Basaksehir players who attempted to stop them" (ESPN.com, 4/24).
