Event Notes: North American Bid For 2026 World Cup Backed By Oceania

The U.S., Canada and Mexico bid to co-host the 2026 World Cup is supported by the 11-nation Oceania Football Confederation. Oceania said that it also agreed the bid should have "an exclusive period of negotiation" with FIFA for the next year. Oceania FIFA VP David Chung said that "it makes sense on a rotational basis" for the '26 edition to return to North America (AP, 4/18).

The PGA Tour announced the Web.com Tour's Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship in the Dominican Republic will transition to the PGA Tour beginning next season. It will debut from March 19-25, 2018, the same week as the World Golf Championships Match Play, offer 300 championship points to the winner and carry a purse of at least $3M. Through a new four-year agreement, Grupo Puntacana, which owns and operates Puntacana Resort & Club, will serve as the host organization and the Tom Fazio-designed Corales course will remain the tournament course (PGA Tour).

Chilean first division side Audax Italiano will visit Australia in July for a preseason friendly against A-League side Newcastle Jets at McDonald Jones Stadium. The match, presented by production company VisionMAX, will kick off on July 8 at 7pm (Newcastle Jets).

A Danish Superliga game between Brondby and Copenhagen was "marred when home fans threw dead rats at a player." Brondby supporters threw the rodents at Copenhagen defender Ludwig Augustinsson as he went to take a corner (BBC, 4/18).
