Football Federation Australia Free-To-Air Rights Bids Due By Sunday

Bids for Football Federation Australia's free-to-air broadcast and telecom rights are due by Sunday "and a deal could be wrapped up by the end of next month," according to Mason & Stensholt of the AUSTRALIAN FINANCIAL REVIEW. The FFA signed a record A$346M ($260M) TV broadcast deal with Fox Sports and Foxtel in December, "but the free-to-air rights remained up for grabs." The sporting body, which recently issued a tender document to broadcasters, is "keen to have a deal for free-to-air wrapped up by the end of May." The tender is understood to have three or six-year contract options. FFA "has been in talks with Nine Entertainment, Seven West Media and Ten Network" (AFR, 4/9). B&T reported it is "predicted the deal will include" a Saturday evening A-League match, along with some of the Socceroos’ 2022 World Cup qualifiers and friendlies, Matildas matches, W-League matches and club friendlies. Furthermore, the broadcast deal "may include exhibition matches played in Australia" that feature int'l teams, as well as an expansion clause that enables new teams to enter the A-League (B&T, 4/10).
