La Liga Side Celta Vigo President Accuses Mayor Of Forcing Team Out

On Friday, Celta Vigo President Carlos Mouriño "launched an order" to Vigo Mayor Abel Caballero and "accused him of forcing the club out of the city," according to MARCA. Mouriño "has repeatedly warned the council that Celta will leave, after the mayor offered him only a 50-year license, instead of selling the club the stadium." He said, "A full refusal to this proposal has already been given to the mayor, it has been published by the media because it is unfeasible. This is not a war between Caballero and Mouriño, it does not coincide with that of Celta, it is also for Celtism, for the city and for Galicia." The club's preference "is to own the stadium." Mouriño added, "We are doing everything we can to stay in the city, but it is impossible. Why they are not letting Celta grow, I do not know" (MARCA, 4/7). In Madrid, Abraham Martinez reported Mouriño "took to YouTube, via the club's social media account," to break the news. Mouriño said that he is "willing to build a new stadium and training facility outside the city limits." The issues stem from work which was needed on Balaídos Stadium. Only €4M ($4.24M) was spent by the council, though €6M ($6.36M) was required to fix it. Mouriño said that he has "already negotiated" a deal outside of the city (AS, 4/7).
