Atlético Madrid CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín Discusses Team's Investment In San Luis

Atlético Madrid CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín discussed the details of his club's investment in Ascenso MX club Atlético San Luis in a Q&A, according to Paulina Benavente of AS. Below are excerpts from his interview:

Q: Why Mexico as the destination of the new affiliate?
Gil Marín: I am convinced that the Mexican market has great potential for growth, both because of its population and the strength of its brands and the influence they have in the U.S. market due to the amount of Mexicans who live there.

Q: Why was San Luis chosen as the vehicle to enter Mexican football?
Gil Marín: San Luis is a state and city with a great football fanbase, which does not have a football team that is represented in the country.

Q: What are the principal characteristics of this project?
Gil Marín: Our intention is to work with a professional team and make it compete using our understanding of this sport, with effort, commitment, respect and talent. At the same time, we want to develop a project with boys and girls where we emphasize growth, both personally and athletically.

Q: What will the team be called?
Gil Marín: Our intention is to strengthen a local brand. It doesn't make sense to call it Atlético Madrid because the team is in Madrid. The question is whether the team should be called Atlético San Luis or Atlético Potosino (AS, 3/27).
