Fire Damages CSL Side Shanghai Shenhua's Hongkou Stadium

Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua's 33,060-capacity Hongkou Stadium was damaged by a "huge fire," according to Luke Brown of the London INDEPENDENT. No casualties were reported after the fire "broke out in the corner of the stadium, early on Tuesday morning." Xinhua reported the fire "had not affected the stands or the pitch and that investigations were ongoing to determine the cause." Video footage "showed flames and smoke pouring out of the side of the Hongkou Stadium" as firefighters battled to "tackle the huge blaze." Arsenal is due to play a preseason friendly at the ground against Bayern Munich on July 19. However, "the damage will certainly be repaired by then" (INDEPENDENT, 3/28). In Hong Kong, Paul Ryding reported there are "no official reports on the extent of the damage" but Cameron Wilson, a Chinese football analyst based in Shanghai, said that the "fire damage appeared to be confined to an area inside the stadium." Wilson: "There’s a part of the roof been burned but from what I know of the stadium, having been going for years, it doesn’t look like anything irreparable." Local media reported that a section of the city’s underground system "had to be closed" (SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST, 3/28).
