CONCACAF President Calls For Automatic Entry For Every Country That Hosts 2026 WC

With the U.S., Canada and Mexico "widely expected to bid jointly" for the 2026 World Cup, CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani, the region's FIFA VP, "believes all three should automatically enter the tournament if chosen as co-hosts," according to the AP. He said that continental football bodies should decide "how to allocate their quota of World Cup entries." Montagliani: "I don't think we should be dictating how a confederation allocates their slots from a hosting standpoint. That's up to them." It is unclear whether FIFA would "guarantee direct entry to multiple hosts," though FIFA President Gianni Infantino "has encouraged multi-nation bids" for an expanded 48-team World Cup from '26. UEFA has "limited direct qualification to two co-hosts for a 24-team European Championship." Each continent's quota from the 16 extra slots "could be agreed next Thursday when Infantino meets Montagliani and the five other confederation presidents" in Zurich (AP, 3/25).

NEXT IN LINE?: The AP also noted Alexei Sorokin, the man in charge of organizing the World Cup in Russia, "is considering running for a spot on the FIFA Council" after the country's deputy PM was barred from standing. Sorokin said that "it would be a big honour" to be nominated by the Russian Football Union, which is headed by Vitaly Mutko. Sorokin added that "the main thing for us is that Russia doesn't lose its council place after certain events" (AP, 3/23).
