Tottenham Cleared To Play 27 Matches At Full-Capacity Wembley In '17-18

Tottenham Hotspur will be able to play 27 matches at a "full-capacity Wembley next season" after Brent Council approved an increase in the number of "big events" that can be held at the national stadium by a majority of five to one, according to Gary Jacob of the LONDON TIMES. The club has an agreement to use the stadium as a temporary home while White Hart Lane is redeveloped and has until March 31 to activate its option. Tottenham would be able to stage most of its games in front of nearly 90,000 spectators, although it "could also host matches at a reduced capacity of 50,835 and close the top tier of the stadium." Permission has been granted for only one year from August, meaning that Wembley "would need to reapply for a similar consent if Chelsea also want to use the full capacity." The west London club plans to build a new 60,000-seat stadium and is expected to move to Wembley for three seasons from '18-19 (LONDON TIMES, 3/24). The PA reported Tottenham could yet stay at its current ground next season and play home games at Wembley in '18-19, before moving into the new stadium for the '19-20 campaign. The issue of full capacity "proved particularly contentious with objectors," who expressed concerns about anti-social behavior, "the extra strain on transport and the negative impact on local businesses." Transport expert and local resident Fatema Karim-Khaku said that Tottenham’s concerns about the atmosphere at matches "was not a material planning consideration and should not be considered by the committee" (PA, 3/23).
