Atlético Madrid said that an investment of an "undisclosed size" in Ascenso MX club Atlético San Luis has been completed, "pending ratification by the Mexican authorities," according to Dermot Corrigan of ESPN.com. The La Liga club already has "overseas franchises in India and France." Atlético CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín traveled in mid-February to meet with execs at the club based in "the centrally located Mexican city" of San Luis Potosí. San Luis owner the Payan family was in Madrid this week to formalize the deal. Atlético will reportedly "become majority shareholders" in the Ascenso MX outfit, "although the statement on the club's site said all details of the deal will remain private." A "few loose ends still need to be tied up in Mexico." The statement said, "Atletico Madrid have made a strong push for some time to expand internationally, studying the most interesting markets. ... Within these markets the club sees Mexico as very important, so they have been working for some time on the objective of entering it through the Atletico San Luis franchise" (ESPN.com, 3/17).
