League Notes: Swedish Ice Hockey Association Execs Meet NHL GMs To Save Swedish League

Four representatives from the Swedish Ice Hockey Association flew more than 8,000km to speak with NHL GMs in South Florida on Wednesday to "try and save the Swedish Hockey League." SIHA CEO Tommy Boustedt said, "Distance is not a problem. We are more or less losing a team every year" (TSN, 3/8).

Melbourne gangster Mick Gatto "sensationally claimed he was approached" by a senior figure at Australian Football League side Essendon at the height of the drugs saga to "find out what was going on with it all." Club Chair Lindsay Tanner insisted it was Gatto "who came to the club offering help, and he was knocked back." The Bombers are "locked in a bitter legal stoush" with Dean Wallis and ex-team Manager John Elliott -- the latter "alleging that bosses reached out to Gatto" (HERALD SUN, 3/9).
