Football Notes: Fans At Confederations Cup, World Cup Will Need Special Identity Cards

Fans at next year's World Cup and this year's Confederations Cup in Russia "will need special identity cards before they can watch matches," FIFA said Thursday. Football "hooliganism," which "appeared to be waning at major tournaments, has again become a serious concern after Euro 2016 in France, when Russians were in the thick of the action." FIFA Competitions Dir Colin Smith said that "Russian authorities would be responsible for issuing the identity cards." Smith: "Every fan will be required to have a fan ID to enter the stadiums, both for the Confederations Cup and for FIFA World Cup, and so we have got trust in the authorities that everything will be done." The cards will include the holder's photograph and contact details and can be used instead of visas to enter the country (REUTERS, 3/2).

La Liga side Valencia Marketing Dir Damià Vidagany said that the club is planning on its new stadium being completed in '21. Vidagany added that Valencia's "strategic plan is to create 50 int'l football schools." Club Owner Peter Lim said that the stadium would be completed in '19 when he acquired the club in '14 (SUPERDEPORTE, 3/2).

Korea FA President Chung Mong-gyu said Thursday that "he hopes to co-host the FIFA World Cup with three neighboring nations" in '30. Chung said that the country's football governing body is "mulling over a joint World Cup bid with North Korea, China and Japan." This is the first time that Chung, who has been "leading the KFA" since '13, mentioned the World Cup bid in detail. South Korea co-hosted football's "signature competition" with Japan in '02 (KOREA HERALD, 3/2).

Bolivia appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport "after losing four World Cup qualifying points for fielding an ineligible player." Bolivia beat Peru 2-0 at home then held Chile 0-0 away in the first week of September but FIFA's disciplinary committee "awarded 3-0 walkovers" to their opponents in each case. FIFA ruled that Bolivia had fielded Paraguayan-born Nelson Cabrera when he was ineligible to play. Bolivia "already lost an appeal to FIFA itself" (REUTERS, 3/2).

A "crowdfunding appeal" has been set up for five people whose relatives died in the '89 Hillsborough disaster, after a judge ordered them to pay the £28,000 ($34,300) legal costs of former South Yorkshire Police Chief Constable David Crompton. Lady Justice Sharp made the costs order after "refusing an application by the five family members to be formally involved in Crompton's appeal against his dismissal" by the South Yorkshire police and Crime Commissioner Alan Billings last year (London GUARDIAN, 3/2).
