Australian Olympic Committee Accuses Telstra Of 'Ambush Marketing' During Olympics

Telstra engaged in "ambush marketing" by associating itself with the Olympics brand in its "Go to Rio" advertising campaign "without paying for the valuable rights," the Full Federal Court has been told, according to Michaela Whitbourn of the SYDNEY MORNING HERALD. The Australian Olympic Committee claimed the telecom "misled and deceived consumers" by suggesting an official "association with the Olympics brand" in its Rio Olympics-themed advertising campaign. The AOC is "locked in a protracted legal battle with Telstra that began in July last year," weeks before the Rio Games. On Monday, the committee's barrister, Tony Bannon, told the court that Telstra had engaged in "ambush marketing," where companies "suggest an association with a high-profile event that already has official sponsors." The "Go to Rio" TV commercial, which included the Telstra logo and the words "Official Technology Partner of Seven's Olympic Games Coverage," was played in court on Monday (SMH, 2/27).
