Counties Warned They Could Lose Home Twenty20 Blast Matches

Counties have been warned that they "may lose two of their seven home" T20 Blast matches when the proposed new Twenty20 competition starts in '20, according to Elizabeth Ammon of the LONDON TIMES. To "accommodate the additional competition, which is likely to comprise eight new regional teams," the existing competition is "likely to drop" from 14 group matches per team to 10, meaning only five home games. The plan has led some counties to "fear that total attendances for the Blast may drop" by up to 40%, which on "present attendances would be a reduction of more than 300,000 people." The counties have also asked the England & Wales Cricket Board's T20 working party to "confirm what share of income" it will be guaranteed from the new tournament. The 18 counties "have received reassurances that they will each receive a guaranteed percentage of the profits from the new competition" but have not been given a figure (LONDON TIMES, 2/27).
