Aston Villa's Accounts Show £81M Loss Prior To Relegation

League Championship side Aston Villa's accounts showed that the club "recorded a loss of more than" £81M ($100.7M) for the last financial year, according to the PA. The figures for the '15-16 period show that with an operating loss of £81.3M ($101M), the "deficit more than trebled," up from £26.6M, before Villa was relegated from the Premier League. The club’s statement shows losses of £79.6M ($99M) due to "exceptional items" but "provides little explanation as to what these are," other than to say "for the impairment of tangible fixed assets and intangible assets." Tony Xia completed his takeover of the club in June '16, "so any figures associated with his purchase will not show" until the '16-17 accounts are published (PA, 2/27). The BBC reported Aston Villa's average home gate revenues "were hardly affected despite such a poor season." The drop in revenue is "attributed to a smaller share of Premier League money." The club's average home league attendance in '15-16 was 33,690, "a fall of only" 1.33% on the previous campaign, when it averaged 34,133 at its 42,660-capacity Birmingham home. Intangible assets, "which include the value of its players' registrations," dropped by £34.8M ($43.3M). Tangible assets "include property and equipment the club owns" (BBC, 2/27).
