New lights, an "upgraded playing surface and improved training facilities are the likely highlights" of a multi-million dollar facelift for Australian Football League side Carlton's "iconic" Ikon Park home, according to Sam McClure of THE AGE. An AFL review of suburban venues, "which will be closely monitored by the state government, will concentrate on major plans for Ikon Park." The "overwhelming success" of AFLW has prompted the league to "expedite plans to transform the venue into a state-of-the-art stadium," ideal for women's league matches, men's preseason games and possibly for matches for AFL premiership points. The club and league officials "are discussing a proposal that will help Carlton make significant changes to Ikon Park, including installing new change rooms and re-laying the surface." Any agreement is "also likely to see permanent lights installed at the ground to avoid the need for temporary lighting for night matches," which have been used twice so far in the inaugural season of women's football. The AFL and the state government "will chip in for the proposal." AFL Game Development Manager Simon Lethlean said, "[Ikon Park] is a venue that we utilize for academy programs and our umpiring and has a natural 20,000-plus capacity already that would be a good foundation that we would look to invest for major events like AFL women's footy and preseason matches" (THE AGE, 2/27).
