SPFL, Scottish FA Back Aberdeen's Bid For New Stadium

Scottish football execs "have thrown their weight behind" Premiership side Aberdeen's "bid for a new stadium," according to the Scotland DAILY RECORD. The Scottish Professional Football League and Scottish FA "have written to Aberdeen City Council in support of the planning application for state-of-the-art facilities at Kingsford." It is a "welcome boost" after the neighboring local council revealed it is "against the plans." The Hampden hierarchy believes "the club's future rests on the Reds being given the go-ahead for a development of community and sports campus, football academy and new stadium." SPFL CEO Neil Doncaster said, "Aberdeen FC is one of the most successful and established clubs in Scotland. The importance of elite clubs having their own campus facilities is widely recognized as essential in ensuring continued competitiveness." SFA CEO Stewart Regan echoed Doncaster and insisted "new facilities are a must for the club if they are to remain one of Scotland's leading teams." Regan said, "We fully support Aberdeen's modernization strategy" (DAILY RECORD, 2/27).
