Media Notes: FIFA 17 Matches To Be Shown Live On BT Sport

Competitive FIFA 17 matches will be shown live on British TV "for the first time after BT Sport was awarded the rights" to the EA FIFA Majors. The broadcaster announced it would air the remaining four majors in the FIFA Ultimate Team Championship Series in April and May "in an exclusive deal with Electronic Arts." The remaining four EA FIFA Majors start on April 8 with the North American regional final in Vancouver, followed by the Asia-Pacific regional final in Singapore on April 22, the European regional final in Madrid on May 6 and the FIFA 17 Ultimate Team Championship final in Berlin from May 20-21 (London TELEGRAPH, 2/23).

The Argentine FA will delay its decision on which broadcaster will be awarded its TV rights by one week. ESPN, Mediapro and a joint offer from Fox-Turner are the three bidders (LA NACION, 2/22).

Sky is "speaking to creative agencies as it prepares to shake up its sports-subscription service." The broadcaster "approached shops as it considers making changes to its customer packages for Sky Sports." It "currently works with Adam & Eve/DDB, Brothers and Sisters, FCB Inferno and WCRS" (CAMPAIGN LIVE, 2/23).

Former England captain Alan Shearer will "present a BBC One documentary this summer on scientific research linking football and dementia." The ex-Newcastle and Blackburn striker will front "Dementia: Football's Silent Shame?" in a bid to "find out if footballers are more at risk from suffering in later life" (BBC, 2/23).

The Women's Six Nations Championship has attracted record live TV and streaming audiences across the six countries in the first two weekends with over 2.2 million viewers following the matches. All 15 matches were for the first time broadcast in 100 countries. In addition, highlights programs on the BBC in the U.K. and RTÉ in Ireland have attracted a further 900,000 viewers over the first two weekends (Six Nations).

Discovery’s newest offering in the sports industry, DSport, "has acquired the rights of the Chinese Super League." The channel "also acquired rights for three other major national football leagues" -- the Brasiliero, Major League Soccer and the Portuguese league. DSport is also "willing to take part in the bidding process for bagging the rights" to telecast the Indian Premier League later this year (INDIAN TELEVISION, 2/22).

Tens of thousands of fans "found a way to beat the Edinburgh derby TV blackout." UEFA banned domestic football "being shown live on Champions League nights." More than 100,000 people watched Hibernian take on Heart of Midlothian live on Periscope (Scotland DAILY RECORD, 2/22).

Omnigon was awarded an Interactive Media Award with the highest honor of Best in Class distinction for its work on the DFB Cup mobile app. The award recognizes achievement in the fields of web design and development. The DFB Cup mobile app was released in Aug. '16 in German and English (Infront).

The Man City vs. Monaco (5-3) Champions League match drew an average audience of 1.1 million viewers on beIN Sports. The pay-TV channel recorded a peak audience of 1.2 million (L’ÉQUIPE, 2/22).
