Football Notes: La Liga Side Atlético Madrid Reaches 100,000 Members

Atlético Madrid's social growth "remains unstoppable and the club on Thursday celebrated reaching the 100,000-member mark." Atlético finished last season with 86,253 members, and has added nearly 14,000 in the past eight months. Of the team's 100,000 members -- spread out over 74 countries -- 48,441 are season-ticket holders and 51,559 "are members without season tickets" (MARCA, 2/23).

The Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) and German FA (DFB) signed a memorandum of understanding in Johannesburg, South Africa, that seeks to "jointly improve administration, and development of football in Rwanda." The partnership, which will span two years, will focus on technical and administrative assistance (NEW TIMES, 2/23).

The German Football League (DFL) said that "45 incorrect calls could have been averted" had the video assistant referee system been in place during the Bundesliga's first 21 matchdays. The Bundesliga will officially use the VAR system next season after being "successfully tested during the first half of the current campaign" (ESPN.com, 2/23).

The All India Football Federation is expected to "drastically increase the number of Indians getting introduced to competitive football in their formative years," with plans for a "baby league" set to be finalized by March. The league is the "brainchild" of AIFF Head of Youth Development Richard Hood, who is being "helped in this endeavour" by Savio Medeira, the former I-League side Salgaocar midfielder and national team coach. Medeira said, "The idea is to have children start playing football seriously from the age of five, six, seven or eight, just the way that it happens in developed football nations" (ESPN.com, 2/22).
