Spanish Olympic Committee President Blanco Touts Recent Accomplishments

Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) President Alejandro Blanco "believes that despite a significant decrease in public funding for sports federations," Spain remains "a leader on the int'l level and that there is no country where the results-to-investment equation is better," according to the EFE. Blanco: "The miracle of Spanish sport is a concept that politicians do not like, but with much less money we keep having good results." He pointed out that public funding for Olympic sports dropped from €63M for the 2008 Olympic cycle to €32M for Rio 2016. Blanco added that Spanish Olympic athletes received less funding for last year's Games than Italy (€200M), Ecuador (€100M) and Portugal (€35M). Blanco "did admit his concern for the future due to the lack of economic resources." He said, "If there is no immediate remedy, the crisis will affect Tokyo" (EFE, 2/22).
