Olympique Lyonnais Expects To Seal Stadium Naming Rights Deal Later This Year

Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyonnais announced that it expects to “finalize a naming rights sponsorship for its new stadium in the second half of the year” for €6M-€10M ($6.3M-$10.5M), according to Gilles Festor of LE FIGARO. The Parc OL was inaugurated on Jan. 9, 2016, and “is still waiting to be renamed.” While presenting the quarterly results for the OL Groupe -- the controlling stakeholder of the club -- OL President Jean-Michel Aulas confirmed that “he had high hopes of finalizing the project soon.” He said, “We want to take our time because the market has been disrupted by several projects that could not be done at the market price. We’ve waited and now we have French and Chinese candidates. We expect to be in the target price. We don’t want a €1.8 million ($1.9M) stadium name like the [Olympique de Marseille] Orange Vélodrome.” Last August, Aulas referenced French accounting firm Fiducial as a possible candidate. L’Équipe reported a potential deal worth €2.5M ($2.6M) per year, but OL “expects a far superior financial windfall.” Aulas: “The range is between €6 and €10 million annually” (LE FIGARO, 2/22).
