UEFA said that any potential Champions League ban for Bundesliga side RB Leipzig or Austrian Bundesliga club Red Bull Salzburg for having the same owner is "hypothetical" until the qualifying places have been decided at the end of the season, according to Ed Dove of REUTERS. Austrian daily Salzburg Nachrichten reported on Wednesday that UEFA offered "early signals" that one of the two clubs -- both owned by Austrian energy drink company Red Bull -- would be "prevented from playing in the Champions League, should both qualify." Both RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg are "on course to qualify" for the Champions League based on their current league positions. A UEFA statement said, "(There will be) more concrete information from the beginning of June, when the list of participating clubs taking part in UEFA European competitions is published" (REUTERS, 2/22). GOAL reported rules state "no two clubs controlled by the same sponsor, organisation or person may play simultaneously in European competition." RB Leipzig's "spectacular rise" to the Bundesliga has been met with "disdain from rival clubs," with many protesting the club's success, having been founded in '09 as a "marketing arm" for Red Bull (GOAL, 2/22). In London, Anthony Chapman reported RB Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff is confident that both Red Bull teams will be "unaffected in the new campaign." Mintzlaff said, "We are not nervous at RB Leipzig and also the UEFA signals don't exist. If we qualify, there is no reason why we should doubt to play in Europe next season" (THE SUN, 2/22).
