Real Madrid Reportedly Considering Adding Women's Basketball Team

Catalan broadcaster RAC1 announced that Real Madrid "is considering creating a women's basketball team," according to AS. Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB) VP José Antonio Montero said, "It would be very good news, it is important that the biggest brands in sports have representation in women's leagues." FEB sources "said that for now the conversations have not gone beyond the normal communication between Real Madrid and the FEB." It is "worth noting that the head of Real Madrid basketball, Juan Carlos Sánchez, has a great relationship with the FEB and its president, Jorge Garbajosa." Real Madrid previously had a women's basketball team, but it dissolved in '77 (AS, 2/13). In Madrid, Darío Ojeda reported Sánchez "said that as of today, Real Madrid is not considering having a women's basketball team." Real Madrid currently has no women's teams, "although there have been reports in recent months saying the club is working to have a women's football team." Sánchez "did not rule out the possibility of a women's basketball team in the future, but denied that this is currently being planned" (EL CONFIDENCIAL, 2/13).
