German sports presenter BIRGIT NÖSSING joined Eurosport and will be a part of its exclusive PyeongChang 2018 coverage in Germany. She will present live from PyeongChang, joining a team that includes ski jumping experts SVEN HANNAWALD and MARTIN SCHMITT (Eurosport). ... Former New York City Marathon Race Dir ALLAN STEINFELD died, aged 70. Steinfeld had worked alongside NYC Marathon Founder FRED LEBOW. Steinfeld became the technical director of the marathon in '81. When Lebow became ill with cancer in '93, Steinfeld took over as New York Road Runners president and later became CEO and NYC Marathon race director following Lebow's death in '94 (IAAF). ... Real Madrid player PEPE "will move" to Chinese Super League side Hebei China Fortune next season. His contract with Real Madrid "expires in the summer and he will not sign a new deal to remain in the Spanish capital." As El Partidazo de COPE reported, the Portugal int'l will join MANUEL PELLEGRINI's side in a deal worth €15M ($16M) per season (MARCA, 1/25). ... Japan's "long wait for a homegrown sumo grand champion has ended after KISENOSATO became the first Japanese wrestler to reach the ancient sport's pinnacle in almost two decades." The 30-year-old became the sport’s 72nd yokozuna, or grand champion, after Japan’s sumo association approved his promotion on Wednesday "in a move purists hope will mark the start of a challenge to years of dominance by overseas wrestlers" (London GUARDIAN, 1/24). ... CRISTIANO RONALDO has "so many awards, he has had to build a museum in order to house them all -- and he'll have to find an extra bit of shelf space after picking up another gong." Ronaldo was named most valuable player in the All Football awards for '16 "by Chinese fans." The award is given each year by users of Dongqiudi, a "major social media group in China, and was presented to Ronaldo in Madrid" (London DAILY MAIL, 1/25). ... Lancashire County Cricket Club player TOM SMITH announced his retirement at the age of 31 "after a series of injury problems." Smith was named captain of the Red Rose for the '15 season, "but only skippered the team in one game after being told he needed back surgery" (BBC, 1/25). ... Former European Tour CEO GEORGE O’GRADY was announced as the incoming honorary president of the PGAs of Europe, taking over from PIERRE BECHMANN at the association’s AGM last week. O’Grady will take up the role after over 40 years in golf (European Tour).

BOLT LOSES RELAY MEDAL: USAIN BOLT "has been stripped" of one of his nine Olympic medals after one of his Jamaican 4x100m teammates, with whom Bolt won Gold at the 2008 Olympics, "tested positive for a banned substance." NESTA CARTER "was caught out in the reanalysis of urine and blood samples from the Beijing Games." Carter, the sixth-fastest 100m runner of all time, ran the opening leg of the Olympic final eight years ago (London TELEGRAPH, 1/25).
