IAN DRAKE stepped down as British Cycling's CEO "earlier than had been expected." The move comes as a UK Sport independent investigation into culture and practices at the organization "prepares to report next month." Drake, CEO since Oct. '09, "announced in October he would be stepping down in April." British Cycling said that Drake had "completed the handover phase" and would be temporarily replaced by COO JAMIE OBANK until a new CEO is appointed (BBC, 1/20). ... STEVEN GERRARD will return to Liverpool, "with the former captain taking up a position as an academy coach." Gerrard, 36, "will have a roaming role" between the club’s U23 and U16 sides and "will embark on a path next month that could lead him to management." He will be mentored by Liverpool Academy Dir ALEX INGLETHORPE and STEVE HEIGHWAY (LONDON TIMES, 1/21). ... Former National Rugby League side Manly Sea Eagles coach GEOFF TOOVEY has been "appointed as the new coach of the reformed Bradford Bulls." The 47-year-old Australian "spent three years as coach" of the NRL side before leaving in '15. He replaces compatriot ROHAN SMITH, "who left the club on Tuesday by mutual consent" (BBC, 1/20).
