Media Notes: CCI Approves $385M Acquisition Of Taj Television By SPNI

The Competition Commission of India approved the $385M acquisition of Taj Television, the sports broadcasting subsidiary of ZEEL, by Sony Pictures Networks India. With the CCI clearance, Taj Television's sports channels under the "Ten" brand have "crossed the biggest hurdle in becoming part of Sony." This "paves the way for India becoming a duopoly sports broadcasting market" (TELEVISION POST, 1/19).

Snapchat is "about to launch a new line of football-related filters." The company is "rolling out a set of 13 bespoke lenses" that will feature the crests and colors of the top club sides in England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. The new lenses will allow fans to apply virtual club-themed face paint and also play a mini game in which they can head a football in real time (ESPN.com, 1/20).

Ironman has partnered with Omnigon to design and develop an all new Ironman digital and online experience. The upgraded platform is designed to drive engagement with current and new Ironman fans and athletes. This new mobile experience is live now and features an image-based redesign of the main Ironman.com website. The redesign and format change offers a better overall experience on mobile devices including phones and tablets. Additionally, this relaunch features photo galleries which are viewable on mobile devices for the first time (Infront).

A group of hackers claiming to be based in Russia said on Saturday that "they had shut down the website of the Africa Cup of Nations soccer tournament in a protest" of organizers holding it in the "dictatorship" of Gabon, where President Ali Bongo Ondimba "retained power in disputed and violent elections last year." A person sent an email to the AP claiming the group New World Hackers had "taken down" the Confederation of African Football's official website, which is the website of Africa's top football body as well as the continent's main football tournament. The site CAFonline.com "was not working for at least five hours on Saturday afternoon and evening" (SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST, 1/22).

FIBA announced it reached an agreement with TV5, a major Filipino commercial multi-channel and multi-platform network, for exclusive rights to FIBA national team competitions over the course of a five-year period. From '17 to '21, TV5 will broadcast action from the Continental Cups as well as the FIBA Basketball World Cup. The partnership will be in effect across all platforms (FIBA).
