La Liga side Sporting Gijón appointed JOAN FRANCESC FERRER, who is also known as "RUBI," as its new head coach following the departure of ABELARDO FERNANDEZ. The club announced the arrival of the former Valladolid and Levante boss on its official Twitter account on Wednesday (PA, 1/18). ... Vietnam's national women's volleyball team hired Japanese coach HIDEHIRO IRISAWA to push the team "to a higher level." His first task "is to prepare the squad for the Southeast Asian Games in Malaysia later this year." Irisawa will earn $6,000 per month and will also be involved with coaching the U19 and U23 squads (VIETNAM NEWS, 1/19).
