Horse Racing Finishes Second In British Sporting Attendance In '16

Racing "won back its position as the second most popular sport in Britain in terms of attendance last year with almost six million people going to a meeting and enjoying a day out," according to Mark Souster of the LONDON TIMES. The "positive news is further evidence of racing's enduring and growing appeal and comes soon after the announcement of the new levy rate," which will add more than £40M ($49.5M) annually "to the sport's coffers," along with the recent broadcast rights deal with ITV. Football remains the "big beast," but racing demonstrated that it can "hold its own in a competitive market-place and offer a product and experience which ranks among the best in sport in terms of customer satisfaction," according to a leading industry survey. In '15, racing "slipped" to third place behind rugby because of the World Cup being held in England but "bounced back" to a figure of 5.99 million last year, almost double that of 30 years ago. Racing also attracts almost 40% women, double the sporting average. Attendances were "even more impressive given that 56 meetings were abandoned in the early part of the year." Royal Ascot, Cheltenham and Epsom were all among the top 10 attended events of last year. Racecourse Association CEO Stephen Atkin said, "The five-year growth trajectory highlights that a day out at the races continues to increase in popularity" (LONDON TIMES, 1/19).
