Argentine FA's Talks With Government, Broadcasters Reportedly Making Progress

There "once again appears to be the beginning of a solution to untie the economic knot that is increasingly suffocating Argentine football," according to Enrique Gastañaga of CLARÍN. There is "light emerging from two negotiations" in which first division side San Lorenzo VP Marcelo Tinelli is a "central figure." One of the conversations "is about the government's rescission of the Fútbol para Todos TV contract." The other "has to do with the attempt to reach an agreement for a private business to buy the TV rights." Despite "the progress, there have still not been any signs of a consensus between the first division and the lower tiers." Argentina Secretary General of the Presidency Fernando De Andreis said that "in the coming days there will be an agreement to terminate the FPT deal that was going to expire in '19." The AFA will reportedly receive 530M Argentine pesos ($33.2M) "to conclude a story that started in '09." Turner and Fox "have also reportedly increased their initial offer for the TV rights to the first division." The offer has jumped from 2B Argentine pesos ($125.2M) to 2.4B Argentine pesos ($150.2M). However, "the economic discussion is ongoing." Tinelli and the AFA want a deal worth at least 3B Argentine pesos ($187.8M), plus 500M Argentine pesos ($31.3M) in variables (CLARÍN, 1/19).
