Worcestershire Country Cricket Club appointed former captain NORMAN GIFFORD as its new county president. The 76-year-old ex-England player "succeeds lifelong Worcestershire fan" and former Bank of England Governor MERVYN KING. Lancashire-born Gifford will take up office, for two years, starting March 22 (BBC, 1/17). ... Disappointed at the direction the Australian Rugby League Commision has taken in the past 18 months, "particularly the recent surrender" by Chair JOHN GRANT to National Rugby League clubs "over funding, two of Australia's most prominent businessmen have resigned as commissioners." GRAEME SAMUEL, a former Australian Football League commissioner and head of the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission, "will not stand for re-election at the ARLC's annual general meeting in February" and CSR Chair JEREMY SUTCLIFFE has "already tendered his resignation, despite his term not expiring." The NRL confirmed both departures (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 1/18).

COACHES/MANAGERS: La Liga side Sporting Gijón said that ABELARDO FERNANDEZ "will not continue as coach" of the club. The announcement was made on Tuesday, "two days after a 3-2 home loss to Eibar, with Sporting mired in the relegation zone." The club said that the decision was made in "mutual agreement" after "analysing the current sports situation and the results obtained." Fernandez's replacement "was not immediately announced" (AP, 1/17). ... Malaysia Super League side Johor Darul Ta'zim announced the appointment of BENJAMIN MORA to take up the spot left vacant by MARIO GOMEZ, "who officially parted ways" with the club on Wednesday. Mora "assumes duty as the club’s coach effective immediately." JDT Sports Dir ALISTAIR EDWARDS said that the decision had been "under consideration for the past few months involving Gomez and the top brass in JDT" (NEW STRAITS TIMES, 1/18).
