GRM Ends Pursuit Of Volvo, Will Use Holdens For Supercars Championship

Garry Rogers Motorsport confirmed it will use Holdens in the 2017 Supercars Championship, "bringing to an end Volvo’s three-year journey in the series," according to FOX SPORTS. Volvo announced in May that it would exit the series at the end of the '16 season, "leading to a tug of war over the engines and bodywork" as GRM asserted its right to use it for an additional season in '17. While more mediation with Volvo Car Australia was scheduled for next month, GRM Owner Garry Rogers has confirmed the team will "instead use a pair of brand new Holden Commodores in the new season." The cars were built brand new in December "in parallel with two new chassis for its Dunlop Series effort, while the engines have been supplied by Walkinshaw Racing." Rogers said in a statement, "The 'off season' for GRM has been the busiest in our 50 plus years of racing. Following the factory withdrawal, our plan was to still utilize the Volvo, which we had invested thousands of man hours and obviously a considerable financial sum to first design, develop, build and homologate, but the hurdle that we encountered was engine supply." The team will continue to receive sponsorship from Wilson Security, Payce and Valvoline, while Volvo Trucks "will also continue to supply the team with a truck to pull its transporter" (FOX SPORTS, 1/18).
