McIlroy Tops Golf's Rich List For First Time With $49.5M In '16 Earnings

Rory McIlroy "topped golf's rich list" for the first time by earning $49.5M in '16, despite not winning a major for the second year in a row, according to Chris Cutmore of the London DAILY MAIL. The Northern Irishman "amassed a fortune in just one year thanks in no small part to winning the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup," and the $10M bonus that comes with it. His on-course earnings totaled $17,514,505 for the year but the $32.5M he earned off it, "thanks to sponsorship deals with the likes of Nike, Omega, Bose and Electronic Arts, saw him top a very expensive pile." Remarkably, Arnold Palmer earned more than anyone else in the game other than McIlroy in the year that he died, aged 87. The King, "as he was affectionately known," still racked up $40M "thanks to his portfolio of golf businesses and own brand of iced tea." McIlroy is only the third person to top the list, which has been compiled by Golf Digest for the last 14 years. Jordan Spieth was the highest earner in the '16 list (based on earnings in '15), "knocking Tiger Woods off the summit for the first time."
